Fur parents, especially those who have had the experience of having pups at home, are no strangers to sleepless nights because their dog finds a hard time sleeping at night. Although this seldom happens to adult dogs, we should always check on them to make sure they are safe, and comfortable and that they are actually sleeping.

When your dog has a hard time sleeping, your routine with him/her can be affected as well. There will be that constant wondering “what does my dog want?”, “what is wrong with my dog?”, “Is my dog okay?”, sometimes it's really challenging to figure it out. When this happens, your dog is not the only one who is stressed out, but it also affects you. To avoid sleepless nights, here are some tips on how to help your dog get better sleep at night.

Keep your dog healthy

Your number one priority is to make sure that your dog is healthy and happy during his/her canine years with you. Like humans, unhealthy or sick dogs tend to become really uncomfortable too. They find it difficult to sleep may be because of several reasons like pain, pressure or tension in some parts of their bodies, anxiety and other things.

Remember that a sick dog is not a happy dog. If you feel like he or she is acting strange or you think he or she is feeling something serious, stop counting on the internet to give you answers. Go to your vet and have your dog checked immediately.

Always remember to get regular vet checkups, give quality food in the right amounts, at the right time and lots of fresh and clean water.

Make a routine

When we feel like our dog is not acting normally or that there is something off about how he or she is behaving, as fur parents, we often worry.

Like taking care of a tiny human at home, the best thing to do is to start a routine to condition the baby’s mind and body that there are certain things that need to be done at a certain time. As for dogs, know when to take them out on regular morning and afternoon walks. Not only does this give them the exercise that they need, but also let’s them “do their business” while they are outside the house. As a part of your routine, your dogs should also know when it is time to eat and when to sleep. If your continue to play with your dog during the wee hours at night, don’t expect that he or she will simply fall asleep when you decide to.

Limit food before bedtime

To make sure that our dogs digest their food properly, avoid giving them food right before bedtime.

Food gives them energy, so this might cause them to be up at night and ready to play or maybe even go to the potty. Limiting their food before the night is not only best for them but also for you.

You don’t want to be getting up in the middle of the night cause your dog needs to go. Likewise, you do not, at all, want to be cleaning up a messy bed, if you know what we mean.

Create a comfortable resting environment

If dogs do not feel safe or if the temperature of the room makes them uncomfortable, even if they want to sleep and do not disturb anyone, they will have no choice but to move around. This can cause stress and anxiety for dogs! Even us hoomans want a comfortable room and bed, right?

Other than routines, and regular vet checkups, what your dog needs is a comfortable space that he/she can call his/her own. If you’re a little extra, you can always designate a room to be your dog bedroom. However, don’t worry, it’s not required. You can simply buy a nice dog bed that serves the purpose you need it to, but still, look classy of course.
